History of a Painting - Episode 2: The Light in the Shadow
Narrated by Cerys Matthews
"Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria", Artemisia Gentileschi — 1615-1617 - National Gallery, London
Narrated by Cerys Matthews, this episode explores the extraordinary story of one of today’s most celebrated Baroque artists: Artemisia Gentileschi.
We follow her journey as she navigates a world where women have virtually no rights, and becomes one of Europe’s most celebrated and in-demand painters of her time. Artemisia painted herself into posterity within her own lifetime. In this 3-Act episode, we explore how she rose up against the odds and continues to capture our imaginations today.
History of a Painting - Episode 1: What’s the point?
Narrated by Speech Debelle
"A Sunday on La Grande Jatte", Georges Seurat — 1884 - Art Institute of Chicago
Here we recreated a late XIXth century version of Paris, with anthropomorphic buildings and objects to support Speech Debelle’s narration. The pilot’s 3 Act structure starts with the artist’s context, moves onto the creation of La Grande Jatte, and finishes with the themes of Georges’ story and how they relate to us today.
This episode includes three “Story Bonuses” which are activated with the viewer’s gaze. These play at the end of a chapter so as not to break the narrative flow.
